Pine Tree Camp stands alone when it comes to nature and nature-based recreation for people with disabilities. This uniqueness earned the camp a 2019 Movement Grant from the Quimby Family Foundation. Before he died, Barry Quimby set up a fund that would continue to support the nonprofit organization where he had worked for nearly 20 years. The Run of River Whitewater Recreation Area was awarded a $20,000 grant from the Quimby Family Foundation to fund next steps of the whitewater park project.

Transforming Katahdin: The Life’s Work Of Roxanne Quimby

The Elliotsville Foundation, a private foundation established by Burt’s Bees founder Roxanne Quimby and her family, has returned seven hundred and thirty-five acres of ancestral land to the Penobscot Nation, the Associated Press reports. And Roxanne Quimby’s vision was to establish a national park site to preserve the natural landscape and resources of Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. A lifelong environmentalist and proud Mainer, the world knows Roxanne for her work with the eco-friendly personal care line Burt’s Bees, and as a longtime supporter of national parks. In 1975, she and her boyfriend, George St. Clair, moved to Maine, bought a tract of land near Guilford, built a cabin and outhouse, and lived a rustic lifestyle. In 1978, the couple had twins; a little later, Roxanne left the family to move into another cabin.
